Hendrick's Double The Curious - Hendrick's Original and Hendrick's Another

The dark bottle and the white one. Take both and it's $60 off a case.

Hendrick's Another is the brand's first new permanent expression in nearly a decade. Same rose and cucumber, with orange blossom and cacao over the top, brighter and more citrus forward than the original.

Two stills, one gin

A Bennett, a Carter-Head, and an auction

Hendrick's is made in two stills that should never have ended up in the same distillery.

1860The Bennett

Botanicals boiled in the spirit

Works the old way, boiling botanicals directly in the spirit, which gives you weight and a hard juniper line.

+
1948The Carter-Head

Vapour passed through the botanicals

Does the opposite, passing alcohol vapour through the botanicals so almost nothing heavy comes across, leaving something floral and quiet.

Charles Gordon bought both at auction in the 1960s and had them restored. Hendrick's launched in 1999, made by blending the two spirits together.

Which almost nobody else attempts, because it means running two distillations to make one gin.

Hendrick's Original & Hendrick's Another

Then the strange part

The cucumber and the rose do not go into either still. They are added at the blend, after distillation, which is why a Hendrick's smells like a cut cucumber rather than a suggestion of one.

It was created by Lesley Gracie, William Grant & Sons' master distiller, and the expressions that have followed have come out of her work rather than a brief.

Hendrick's Another

Another is the first new permanent Hendrick's in nearly a decade, it keeps the rose and cucumber and puts orange blossom and cacao bean through it. The orange blossom lifts the juniper and pushes the whole thing citrus forward. The cacao sits underneath and rounds the finish. Brighter than the original on the nose, and it holds up in a gin and tonic without asking for a different garnish.

It comes at 41.4%, the same as the original, in a white bottle rather than the dark apothecary one. Which means the two sit side by side on a back bar and a customer can see at a glance that there are two.

Why both

Two Hendrick's on the shelf is two different gin and tonics, not two labels of the same drink. The original is the one people know. Another is brighter and more citrus driven, which makes it a genuine second option rather than a variation on the first.
