Roederer planted it, Tasmania made it

In 1986 the Champagne house Louis Roederer went looking for somewhere in the southern hemisphere cold enough to do what they do, and put Chardonnay and Pinot Noir into the ground at Pipers River in Tasmania’s north east. Basalt soils, cool nights, a growing season that behaves a lot like north east France. The Hill-Smith family bought the property in 1998 and it has been family owned since.

The name goes back further

1642

Abel Janszoon Tasman’s ship the Heemskerk sighted the island on 24 November 1642. Jansz is his middle name.

1998

2026

Forty years on, and the fortnight either side of 24 November is still the occasion it was built for.

Méthode Tasmanoise

They call the approach Méthode Tasmanoise, which is the traditional method plus a decision to interfere as little as the fruit will allow. Teresa Heuzenroeder has been making it for more than thirty years.

Where it goes on your list

Glass on arrival is the occasion this wine was built for, and October to December is when it happens. Christmas Day lunches, New Year’s Eve at the door, every function where the first drink has to be poured inside ninety seconds. Magnums pour faster and empty slower, which matters more on 31 December than any tasting note.
