The Vedrenne Collection

Nuits-Saint-Georges, since 1923. The back bar in one house.

Joseph Védrenne started out hauling a mobile still between farms, turning other people's grapes into brandy, before he settled in Nuits-Saint-Georges for the wine and the blackcurrant fields around it. Four generations later the liqueurs and the syrups still come out of that same distillery.

The Vedrenne Collection serve

One house, the whole wall

Most back bars are a patchwork. A cassis from one producer, a triple sec from another, a hazelnut syrup from whoever was on deal that month, and six different ideas about how sweet a liqueur should be. Vedrenne makes the lot, which means the raspberry in the liqueur and the raspberry in the syrup taste like the same fruit, and a spec written in one bottle translates to the other without a rebuild.

That matters most where you're running an alcoholic and a non-alcoholic version of the same drink. Same flavour, same house, no explaining to the guest why the spirit-free one tastes nothing like the original.

How it's made

Fruit goes into maceration sealed away from air and light, so it comes out tasting like the fruit went in rather than browned at the edges. Vedrenne holds Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant certification, the French state's mark for houses whose method is worth protecting, and every liqueur in the range is still made at the original site. Family owned, sold into more than sixty countries, never contracted out.
